| Location of Sonthofen |
| Sonthofen is the most southerly town in Germany and
is situated between two rivers, the Ostrach and the Iller. It
lies in a valley north of the Allgäu-Alps. The settlement
is a small town and is surrounded by forests, fields and
small lakes. Sonthofen has a central position in the Allgäu.
You certainly won't be bored here in Sonthofen, as there
is a wide range of sporting activities available in any season.
However, if you are looking for rest and relaxation, the natural
beauty of this health resort is just right for you. Even "Prinz
Eugen of Bavaria" came to the Oberallgäu for holidays.
He said, that it is one of the nicest places in Germany, both
in the summer and in the winter. |
| The
history of Sonthofen |
|
| Our small town in the Allgäu has about 21.000 inhabitants
and became a city in 1963. It´s a climatic health resort
and it is surrounded by little villages. There are recreation
areas like Burgberg, Rettenberg, Blaichach and Gunzesriedertal
all within a short distance of Sonthofen. You can also find
an incomparable mountain landscape there. |

Nature |
| You can also visit the famous Starzlachklamm. It's an example
of untamed nature near Sonthofen where you can see a lot of
fossils (e.g. a crab). You can also reach the Starzlachklamm
by bike. |

- We recommend to make a guided tour through the brewery
'Hirschbrauerei'. There you will get a meal, a glass
of beer and an original beer jug.
- You can go on a sightseeing tour with a carriage from
April until November.
- You can also visit the cheesemonger«s, a local company
where you can see how our famous cheese is produced.

| Walking is usually the reason, why most
people come to the Oberallgäu. From the mountain tops you
have a great view over the natural beauty of Sonthofen and the
surrounding area. You may be relieved to know that there are
a number of different ways to explore the mountains. Do you
prefer a more comfortable way ? No problem: There are cable
cars or chair lifts which can take you up. Don't worry, if you
get hungry or thirsty, our mountain huts will serve you an original
Allgäuer meal. Biking is another means by which you can
explore the landscape or if you want to experience something
more exciting, you can hire a paraglider and say "hello"
to eagles. Rafting down the Iller and other rivers is also great
fun. There are many more exciting things to discover in the
Allgäu. So don't wait! Spend your holidays here ! |

You also won't get bored in Sonthofen during
the winter, because there's suitable entertainment for everybody.
You will spend many pleasant days here. For example, strolling
in the pedestrain zone on a nice winter´s evening is very romantic.
Here is some information for athletic people and for families,
who want to enjoy winter activities: Skiers, both beginners
and pros will be able to experience the winter in Sonthofen
at its very best. How about trying something new ? Skis, snowblades,
bigfoots or carvingskis can be hired and if your stomach rumbles
- make a break for one of the numerous huts and enjoy a snack.
An alternative way to enjoy the white landscape is by cross-country
skiing through the snow-covered nature and of course it«s fun
to race down the longest toboggan run in Germany. |
